UNEP Meeting for International Slapstick

Locked information concerning the eleventh meeting Special Session of UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC-UNEP) from February 21 to February 26 this year in Nusa Dua Bali collected criticism from environmental organization.

Considering the meeting strategic condition makes some advices and suggestions from the civil people is necessary. Indonesian government as the host of this meeting, the government since the beginning should conducting information dissemination in order to open participation space as wide as possible.

This critic delivered on Saturday (February 21) by Agung Wardana, an activist from Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI/Friends of the Earth) Bali area.

“This routine consultation meeting is an international slapstick. It is proved by the government and UN entities attended that meeting who failed showed their commitment in climate change meeting in Copenhagen, last December,” said Agung Wardana.
According to Agung, climate change is the biggest environmental problem humankind ever faces and needs extraordinary actions.
Precisely, those related countries more interested to lead it into business direction and not legally binding bring only destruction for the future of earth.

“As everything not much worse, our government, Indonesia, had already like a seller in its real meaning. With selling their stuffs from one international meeting into another, the government hope for their develop countries’ offset fund.”
After they sold carbon in forest sector, they persistently sell carbon on sea in this meeting,” he added.

Asked about Bali’s declaration plan as the greenest province in Indonesia, Agung Wardana said that image projection is in order to raise their own commodity prices is a legal thing to do by those who run their government with image basis. Still, their image should appropriate with the real condition.

“In Bali, it merely in term of provincial policy desires for green area but in regencies/city in particular is damaging the environment and Bali social joints through massive tourism industry development. Is it fit for Bali to claim their tourism economic as the green ones?” as the director of WALHI Bali said sarcastically.
